The winning cover - The winning design is… Co-created by Maryland-based artist Nia Kilimanjaro and myself, this cover brings together symbols and colors that highlight the importance of ancestral and earth wisdoms. Nia designed the centerpiece of the ankh within the sankofa adinkra symbol, within concentric circles. She was inspired by an earlier version of the book, in which these themes were woven throughout. She shared, I picked the Sankofa bird because what i saw in the book was how valuable looking to the source or in the past can be for clarity and understanding of present situations, as well as for providing guidance for future actions. Within Sankofa is the Kemetic ankh, which symbolizes life. At the center of this search for clarity is life, which i think contains the answer to the question of purpose. The multiple concentric circles makes me think about how we go through similar things in life at different stages, which brings new knowledge, insights and perspectives. Additional Highlights in 2020 - Healing Talks, Meditations, Sessions I had the honor of co-facilitating a few sessions with Healing by Choice . Rest and Restoration Series as part of co.act Detroit's Nonprofit Wellbeing Series. Participants joined biweekly sessions from September through November to reflect, rest and learn with each other through our grief. We shared simple practices that participants could use in their daily lives and share with others. Stories by the Fire. In this four-part series offered during the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, we created healing spaces that center Indigenous, Black and people of color who identify as women, gender non-conforming and two spirit people, and the sacred feminine of Grandmother Moon, Mother Earth and Us, a community of humans seeking healing through connection. In Stories by the Fire we invite participants to share stories in ways that answer a larger question, facilitate deeper connection and remind us how valuable our contributions are even though we might not see major change in expected time frames. We began on the summer solstice at the Headwaters of the Mississippi River and wrapped up on the winter solstice at one of the places where it feeds into the Gulf.
