Medew Nefer is a Kemetic (Ancient Egyptian) concept that encompasses the meaning of beautiful speech. It was chosen as a name to refer to this website for two key reasons. For one, I want to acknowledge and ground my work (healing, writing, facilitation) in the ancient wisdoms of the advanced Black African civilization known as Kmt. Secondly, the concept of medew nefer reminds me of my commitment to aspire to be the very best of who i am, which includes speaking and writing with truth (as i understand it), integrity, humility, sincerity and love. I am committed to honoring these traditions and principles in my writing and in the course of offering services for facilitation, spiritual development, and more. Welcome to this site.
My experiences as a grandmother, director, author, connector, researcher, administrator, teacher, activist, Okomfo and traditional healer both inform and are informed by my deep commitment to justice and a better world. Underlying my personal and professional accomplishments have been a deep understanding that as we fight for and bring into being a better world for all, it is important to simultaneously make our inner worlds (i.e., mind-body-spirit) and relationships healthy and whole.
In 2015, i co-founded The Wind & The Warrior and in 2021, i joined Soul Fire Farm Institute’s staff as Co-Executive Director and Managing Director.
A little about me.
Spiritualist and Healer.
As one who has been called and chosen to walk the path of Okomfo (spiritual healer), Reiki Master and herbalist, I am committed to heal and facilitate deep healing and connection of people, the planet and other forms of life, both seen and unseen. It is the strength of my relationships with the Abosom (deities), Nsamanfo (ancestors), Reiki Masters and plant spirits, combined with knowledge of society and social relations, organizational systems and processes, plant medicine, health and wellness that i am able to live up to this divine purpose.
Climate & Environmental Justice Advocate.
I’ve worked and volunteered with various organizations and communities seeking to address the climate crisis and environmental injustices. My work has largely been working behind the scenes, making connections, raising funds, providing support for frontline leadership and building alignment. Organizations include: the U.S. Climate Action Network (Senior Director of Engagement), Greenpeace USA (Community Partnerships Manager), East Michigan Environmental Action Council (Co-Director), and strategic movement consultant to: Building Equity and Alignment for Impact initiative, Edge Funders Alliance, Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, etc.
Evaluator, Connector, Synthesizer.
I’ve worked for and volunteered with many environmental, climate and social justice initiatives, organizations and funders, providing leadership in planning and evaluation, grant writing and management, curricular design and implementation, organizational development, relationship-building, landscape analysis/synthesis and more.
Facilitator.
In recent years, i have facilitated gatherings and alignment processes held by the U.S. Climate Action Network, 350.org North America, Extreme Energy Extraction Collaborative, NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program's Black Labor Convening, Beckner Fund grantee meeting and Michigan Water Unity Table.
Educator and Author.
In formal institutional settings, i’ve designed curricula and taught all ages on a variety of issues, especially sociology, english, and African American history. In non-institutional settings, I have co-written self-published books on ethics, research methods and African American history, as well as trained Reiki devotees and taught courses in herbalism, herbal meditation, energetic healing and spiritual cleansing. I hold a Ph.D. in Sociology from Howard University.
Spiritual Activist.
In 2015 i co-founded The Wind & The Warrior, a collective of spiritualists and activists dedicated to integrating social activism with spiritual practice. We facilitate healing and spiritual development processes for individuals and groups on the frontlines of social justice fights.
Healing Supporter.
Drawing from my experiences and training as an Okomfo (spiritual healer) in the Akom tradition of West Africa and Reiki Master, i have collaborated with individuals and small groups to facilitate healing processes that we co-design or that compliment other existing healing plans.
