Day 176: Democracy
interesting this debate around democracy. for white folks - ruling and middle classes - perhaps this notion of democracy has worked for them. for black folks, native/indian folks, many people of color and even poor whites, democracy has been tenuous at best. the way democracy is experienced by many, if the racialized and class-based enforcement of laws can be offered as evidence, as a system of oppression that nourishes the white ruling class and buys off the middle classes (all races, though in different ways because of white supremacy), through the exploitation and racialized division of working and poor folks.
that said, the pieces of democracy that black folks, native/indigenous folks, chicanos and asians have fought for in america’s troubled history are worth fighting to hold onto and expand to include and impact more people. if there is a chance for so-called democracy to be real for the majority, it is now.
