Day 47: i work
I am trying something new out here. For the next couple of weeks i will take a peek into journal entries of previous years for corresponding days.
The entry below was written during a permaculture internship at Black Oaks Center.
Yesterday we spent time weeding, until it got too hot to work. We weeded pathways to lay cardboard boxes that would then be covered with straw. This was to manage the weeds surrounding the beds. I also did some weeding in the beds of the west garden. The garden beds are too crowded - we initially planted a couple of seeds in each hole to ensure that at least one plant grew. but in most cases, all grew. And while the plants grew, they are small - a bit underdeveloped. (7/7/2011)
For one weekend per month over the course of six months, i sat at the feet of Dr. Jifunza Wright-Carter and Baba Fred Carter to humbly learn any and all that they were willing to share about growing our own food, living off grid, working with plant medicine and so much more. By the end of this internship, i was ready in spirit to find land and begin to build community with folks on a similar path. I wanted to live in right relationship with land and trees. I wanted to work with plant medicine, grow my own food and let go of attachments to harmful products and practices. For many years this was a dream of mine. But circumstances at the time didn’t permit. At the time i was the sole provider for my family. They relied on me to work and work is what i did. That is what i do. i work.
